Australian Government to participate in Earth Hour

Last year the world watched as Australia hosted the inaugural Earth Hour in Sydney. The Harbour Bridge and the Opera House were among the iconic buildings in darkness as they, and more than 2 million residents and 2000 businesses, switched off their lights for one hour.

Energy consumption reduced by around 10 per cent but more importantly the message to save energy was heard around the world.

This year the world is joining in. At 8pm on Saturday 29 March millions of people across four continents will switch off their lights for one hour local time.

Coordinated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Global Earth Hour aims to raise awareness of climate change through the symbolic act of switching off our lights to promote a united commitment to finding solutions.

The Australian Government is ensuring energy-saving actions are in force in its organisations. The Government encourages community participation on the night and continued action in the future. The Australian Embassy in Beijing will switch off all non-essential lighting for an hour from 8pm to 9pm on Saturday 29 March, and will encourage all staff do the same in their homes.

How to Register
To participate, simply register on the Earth Hour website through the following link:

How to Take Action
Join in by switching off all the electric lights in your home from 8pm to 9pm on 29 March. Make sure all unnecessary equipment and appliances are also switched off at the wall, such as computers or laptops, the microwave, phone chargers, MP3 players or the television. Encourage others in your neighbourhood to join in too.

Enjoy your hour of darkness having dinner by candlelight or look at the stars. If you plan to light candles, use 100 per cent beeswax candles for zero emissions. Make sure you never leave candles burning unattended, extinguish them before going to sleep and always use under adult supervision.
