Utopia – A Picture Story exhibition to be held in Beijing

The Australian Embassy Beijing will celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and China with a unique art exhibition at the National Art Museum of China from 20-30 March 2008.

88 beautiful batik paintings on silk fabric by mainly female artists from the remote Australian desert region of Utopia will be exhibited in Beijing. The collection is on loan from Western Australia’s Holmes à Court Collection. These artworks provide a unique expression of ancient Australian indigenous cultural themes, which will be seen for the first time at China’s premier fine arts institution.

“We are delighted to have such a striking collection of Australian aboriginal art in Beijing to mark our long history of interaction with China,” said Australian Ambassador Dr Geoff Raby.

“We are celebrating the establishment of formal diplomatic relations 35 years ago, but in fact our links go back much further. Chinese traders have been visiting northern Australia, where these paintings are from, for over 250 years. Chinese people have been migrating to Australia for over 150 years. So this exhibition is a symbol of our close connections,” Dr Raby added.

Utopia – A Picture Story is lucky to have Tourism Australia and Sino Gold Mining Limited as its major sponsors.

There is growing interest in Aboriginal art in China and around the world. This unique exhibition will deepen understanding in China of its complexity and richness.
