The following is a media release issued by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) on 17 September 2008:
Academies Lead China-Australia Minerals Processing Initiative
Twelve leading Australian scientists will be in China next week to discuss the latest techniques in minerals processing in Australia and China with their Chinese counterparts.
The China Australia Minerals Processing Workshop on 21-22 September is organised by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), with support from the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR).
It will be jointly hosted by the Presidents of the two Academies, Professor Xu Kuangdi, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and Professor Robin Batterham, Group Chief Scientist, Rio Tinto Limited, and formerly Chief Scientist to the Australian Federal Government from 1999 to 2005.
The workshop will be opened by Professor Xu and the opening will be attended by Professor Batterham and the Australian Ambassador to China, Dr Geoff Raby. It will bring together key researchers and leading industry participants from both countries to discuss current and future directions in minerals processing.
Next week’s workshop will be accompanied by two other significant events:
Memorandum of Understanding
On 20 September, ATSE and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) will cement their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation in the fields of applied physics, chemistry, earth sciences, astronomy, remote sensing technology, food science and agriculture, health and biotechnology, nanotechnology, engineering, energy, environmental sciences, urban studies, ICT, and other fields of frontier technology.
Young Scientist Exchange Program
ATSE Fellows and international staff will attend a meeting at the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) on 24 September to meet with some of the young Chinese scientists who will visit Australia during October, as part of the Australia China Young Scientist Exchange Program. The exchange visit will focus on the priority fields of research, including energy, biotechnology and nanotechnology.
Bilateral science and technology cooperation between China and Australia has grown substantially in the past decade and now includes the Australia-China Joint Research Centres, the Australia-China Special Fund Program and the Australia-China Young Scientists Exchange Program, as well as activities and exchanges between Australian and Chinese scientists, institutions and enterprises.
ATSE is an independent body of 770 eminent Australian engineers and scientists established more than 30 years ago to promote the application of scientific and engineering knowledge to practical purposes.
