AWBC Congratulates Wine Students in North East Asia
Friday 18th January 2008
The first winners of the inaugural Wine Australia Travel Scholarship in association with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust have been announced.
Liyan Tang from Beijing, Manin Yeom from Hong Kong and Hee-Seok Seo from Seoul have won the lucrative Scholarship for eligible students in mainland China or Macau, Hong Kong and South Korea.
The Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation (AWBC) has partnered with the world's foremost supplier of wine education and training courses, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), to offer students who have completed an accredited wine course the chance to spend two weeks in Australia.
In the first week the scholarship winners will visit key wine regions and wineries across Australia. In the second week, the students will have an opportunity to gain a unique insight into the Australian wine industry completing a one week work placement with a peak industry organisation or company.
"This is a fantastic step forward for our profile in the North East Asia region, by rewarding WSET students who have a passion to learn more about Australian wine. On behalf of the AWBC I would like to congratulate the Scholarship winners," said Ali Hogarth, Regional Manager with the AWBC.
"The winning candidates all displayed an outstanding knowledge, understanding and interest of our industry – yet they have not had the chance to travel to Australia. We've identified three future ambassadors for Australian wine as part of our key focus on wine and trade education in these markets.
"The industry placement is a unique aspect of these scholarships and will be a great chance for the winners to make contacts that will benefit everybody concerned. We've worked closely with the approved program providers of the WSET curriculum in each of the countries, and were really encouraged by the number and quality of candidates who applied. It has been a really rewarding process to see how much value these students placed on the opportunity to experience first hand the quality and diversity of Australia's wine offering.
“The Scholarship is integral to our commitment to the North East Asia region and demonstrates the importance we place on our education programs. We have several key initiatives including our informative website and Australia: world class which is translated into Korean and simplified Chinese, and the events and activities that we run regularly in conjunction with local importers and distributors,”
she said.
WSET is the largest global provider of education in wines and spirits and currently has qualifications available in 41 countries and in 11 languages. WSET has been developing the trade professional for over 37 years, and in the academic year 2006/2007 over 21,000 candidates sat a WSET examination. Find out more about WSET at www.wsetglobal.com.
