Visa Options

Travellers who wish to visit Australia for tourism or other recreational activities such as holidays, sightseeing, or visiting relatives or friends, should apply for a tourist/visitor visa. People intending a short-term study course of 3 months or less, may also apply for a tourist visa.

Travelers holding a tourist visa must not work or undertake business activities while they are in Australia.

The tourist visa options include:

Tourist visa (Subclass 676): for stays of up to 12 months depending on the intended purpose of the visit. For all clients applying from Mongolia, these applications are processed at the Australian Embassy in Beijing.

Sponsored Family Visitor visa (Subclass 679): for those people who have relatives in Australia. This visa will usually allow a stay of three months but may allow a stay of up to twelve months in certain circumstances. Please note that Sponsored Family Visitor visas are processed in Australia. For detailed information please go to our Sponsored Family Visitor visas page.

Visa Stay Period

The length of stay permitted depends on the applicant's circumstances and the intended purpose of the visit to Australia. Generally, a stay period of up to three months may be granted for the purpose of visiting Australia for tourism.

If you are considering applying for a stay period of longer than 3 months, the decision maker will take all your personal circumstances into consideration, including your family connections in Australia, when determining the length of stay permitted.

In every case the Decision Maker may use their discretion when determining the visa stay period.

Application Requirements

In addition to payment of the Visa Application Charge, there are a significant number of documentary requirements that need to be met, including lodgement of the relevant application forms, a range of supporting documentation, and depending on your circumstances, health requirements and examinations.

Generally, tourist visa applicants do not need to undergo medical examinations or chest x-rays unless:

• The applicant is over 70 years of age;
• The applicant plans to stay in Australia for longer than 3 months;
• The applicant intends a course of study for longer than 4 weeks (x-ray only);
• The applicant is likely to enter a pharmaceutical laboratory, hospital or health care area (including nursing homes) for any reason;
• The applicant is likely to be engaged or enrolled in Australian childcare centre (including preschools or creches) either as an employee or a trainee; or
• The applicant is a parent with a queued migration application and intends a stay greater than 6 months.

For more information on the health requirements for entering Australia, please go to our Health Requirements page.

In addition to the above, further checks in the form of telephone interviews, document examination, verification by document issuing authorities, and third-party telephone checks, may be required in order to verify the information provided in an application.

Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to provide all supporting documentation that will assist in assessing eligibility for a visa. Delays and or application refusal can result from forms not filled in fully, truthfully or accurately; by lack of proper documentation; or if you do not meet the relevant criteria.

Please refer to 2. Checklist - Visitor Visa for a detailed listing of documentary requirements, including application forms and supporting documentation.
