Why is there a health requirement?

Australia enjoys some of the best health standards in the world. In order to maintain these standards, all visa applicants must satisfy health requirements specified in the Migration Regulations, before they can be granted a visa for Australia

Who needs to do a health examination?

Any person who wishes to travel to Australia may be required to undergo a medical check and/or chest x-ray, if the DIAC office deems that their health may be relevant to the grant of a visa.

If you plan to stay in Australia for 3 months or less, and you are:

• aged 75 years or more, a Form 26 medical check or an Aged visitors Health Check proforma is required

If you plan to stay in Australia for 3 to 12 months, and you are:

• aged between 11 & 74 years, a Form 160 chest x-ray examination is required
• aged less than 11 years, a Form 26 medical check is required
• aged 75 years or more a Form 160 chest x-ray is required as well as either a Form 26 medical check or an Aged visitors Health Check proforma

If you plan to stay in Australia for more than 12 months, a medical and chest x-ray examination are required.

Special Circumstances

If you are likely to enter a hospital, childcare facility, aged care facility or pharmaceutical laboratory for any period of time an x-ray and/or a medical examination will be required.

If you are likely to enter a classroom environment for a period of more than 3 months, an x-ray and/or a medical examination will be required.

If you have undergone a medical and/or x-ray examination conducted by an approved panel doctor for the purposes of a previous visa application to Australia in recent months, it is possible that the results of the examination(s) are still valid and may be re-used for the purposes of a subsequent visa application made for travel within 12 months of the examination(s). If this applies to you, check with a Visa Office prior to undergoing another examination.

How do I arrange for a health examination?

In the case of Visitor (Tourist) visa applications and Temporary Residence visa applications, if a medical and/or x-ray examination is required, the applicant should undertake these at an approved panel hospital before lodging their visa application.our office will contact the applicant within 10 working days of receiving their application.

In the case of Partner and Child Migration applications, the applicant should attend a medical and x-ray examination at an approved panel hospital before lodging their visa application. Applicants for other categories of Family Migration should wait until contacted by the Shanghai Visa Office subsequent to lodging their visa application in order to attend a medical and x-ray examination.

Please refer to the checklist relevant to the specific type of visa you are applying for in one of the Visa Options pages for more detailed information on how to go about undertaking the associated medical and/or x-ray examination.

Applicants must undergo their medical examination at an approved panel hospital. Applicants are to arrange an appointment with a panel hospital of their choice - see List of panel doctors in China - and ensure that they take the following with them to the examination:

Form 26 and/or Form 160 as required;
• One passport-size photograph per form; and
• Passport (if possible) or Identity Card

The applicant should also be aware of what type of visa they are applying for, as the panel doctor will need this information in order to complete the health examination forms. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make their own arrangements to attend a medical and/or x-ray examination.

What happens after the health examination?

The doctor will send the results directly to our office. If the tests reveal any health concerns, our office must send the results to the Health Operations Centre (HOC) for further advice. Our officers are required by law to accept the advice given by HOC on whether an applicant meets the health requirement. HOC may request an applicant to do further medical checks before a visa can be granted.

If our office needs to refer the examination results to HOC, it may take up to 4 weeks to receive their advice. It is possible that HOC may request the applicant to undergo further examinations. This may further lengthen the processing time of the application. Applicants have 49 days from the date on the medical letter to complete their examination and for the hospital to forward the completed medical forms to our office (for student applicants this is the date on the PVA letter).

If a further medical or x-ray examination is requested, applicants must undergo the tests within 49 days from the date on the medical letter.
