ACIAR Overview
Established in 1982, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) is an Australian Government agency that operates within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as part of the development cooperation program.
Research funded by ACIAR aims to help partner countries by contributing to solving agricultural problems and building research capacity.
ACIAR facilitates and supports bilateral research and development activities in a broad range of agricultural areas, including crop production and protection, animal health and production, fisheries, forestry, land and water resources management and horticulture.
Our functions are to:
- commission research into improving sustainable agricultural production in developing countries
- fund project related training
- communicate the results of funded research
- conduct and fund development activities related to research programs
- administer the Australian Government's contribution to the International Agricultural Research Centres.
ACIAR also commissions studies of the economic and policy issues concerned with the management of agricultural systems and natural resources, and helps partner countries build their capacity to engage with the increasingly global market economy.
