VACANCY – EXPATRIATE LE 6 VISA PROCESSING OFFICER, AUSTRALIAN EMBASSY, BEIJING

Position Overview
Reporting to the Senior Migration Officer, the Expatriate Visa Processing Officer (VPO) is responsible for deciding the outcome of visa applications in the Visa Office of the Australian Embassy, Beijing.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
• Work within a team to deliver DIBP services in visa application assessment and decision making to high standards of client service, efficiency and integrity, including the processing of more complex applications for entry to Australia, and undertake face-to-face or telephone interviews with clients.
• Prepare correspondence and decision records in relation to Australian visa applications, in accordance with legislative and departmental requirements.
• Respond to more complex client enquiries, including from Australian stakeholders, and prepare responses to written correspondence from clients and stakeholders.
• Under limited direction, undertake clerical and administrative work using computerised systems, to process and decide visa applications for entry to Australia, and maintain records within such systems.
• Undertake ad hoc research and project work, under the direction of the Senior Migration Officer.
• Participate in the work of other DIBP teams in the Embassy, as required.

The position will be offered at the Expatriate LE6 level, commensurate with the relevant duty statement and the applicant’s skills and experience.

The position will be filled on a 12 month contract basis, with the possibility of extension, in line with the conditions of employment applicable to locally engaged staff.

Selection Criteria
Applicants should address all six (6) of the selection criteria below, clearly outlining their claims and specific experience that makes them suitable for this position. The claims against the selection criteria should be no more than two (2) pages.

1. Ability to interpret and apply Australian immigration legislation and policy guidelines; and exercise solid judgement and decision making skills in processing, assessing and deciding visa applications.
2. Demonstrated record of providing excellent service to clients, and/or liaising with stakeholders, from a diverse range of backgrounds.
3. Highly developed oral and written English communication skills, with a sound ability to prepare complex and sensitive correspondence and reports.
4. Strong organisational skills and successful workload management skills in managing a large and complex caseload in a team environment.
5. Proficiency in clerical and administrative work using computer systems, and an ability to work with DIBP-specific and Embassy-specific software.
6. Holds, or is able to obtain, an Australian Government Security Clearance.
Desirable Criteria:
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written Mandarin.

How to apply
The successful applicants must hold, or be able to obtain, an Australian government security clearance. As such, the position is full-time and is open to citizens of Australia. Applications by nationals from New Zealand, Britain, Canada and the USA may also be considered. Please note that all relocation costs are at the expense of the successful candidate, including travel, shipment of personal effects, travel insurance, health insurance and accommodation in Beijing. Applicants should inform themselves regarding living costs and conditions for expatriates in the People’s Republic of China. Australian citizens should make themselves aware of Australian taxation arrangements for Australian citizens working overseas. Applicants must be eligible to be sponsored for a visa in the People’s Republic of China to establish residency and gain a work permit.
