CHINA ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT MANAGER

The Australian Embassy is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons to fill one full-time China Alumni Engagement Manager Level 7 position commencing immediately for a one year term.

The successful applicant will engage with Australian alumni to build alumni networks in China. The position will be located in the Public Affairs Office of the Australian Embassy in Beijing, and will work closely with Education and Austrade colleagues and with the Australian Consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, recognising that Australian alumni are spread across China.

Applicants must be tertiary qualified with at least 2 years of relevant work experience in a professional environment. Studies at an Australian university would be desirable but not essential. Applicants must be fluent English speakers. A high level of written and spoken Mandarin is desirable.

Applications should be in writing and include a cover letter, CV and a supporting statement which directly addresses each of the Selection Criteria respectively. This supporting statement should give examples demonstrating how the applicant’s skills and experience meet the selection criteria. Please note that applications that do not directly address the Selection Criteria will not be considered.

Vacancy: China Alumni Engagement Manager, Public Affairs Section

Level: LE7

1. Organise alumni events and functions within the Beijing Embassy’s jurisdiction, and provide advice and support to the Australian Consulates in Chengdu, Shanghai and Guangzhou to organise events in their jurisdictions. Seek opportunities to include alumni in other relevant events hosted by posts, including events for visiting leaders and ministers.

2. Build the profile of alumni networks in China, including by better leveraging posts’ online and social media platforms.

3. Update the Embassy’s existing alumni database and work with relevant stakeholders to capture the broader alumni community.

4. Develop incentives for alumni to engage, including through networking and other opportunities.

5. Coordinate closely with the New Colombo Plan (NCP) officers at the Embassy and Consulates to ensure NCP participants are integrated into alumni engagement activities and connected at an early stage with current active alumni and youth networks.

6. Strengthen posts’ engagement with relevant alumni networks, such as:

- the Australia-China Alumni Association,
- the network of 42 Australian Studies Centres located in universities across China
- the Australia-China Youth Association
- the Australia-China Young Professionals Initiative
- the Australian Chamber of Commerce in China (AustCham), and
- Advance Asia.

7. Some travel within mainland China may be required. 

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

China Alumni Engagement Manager

Candidates should address each aspect of the following criteria, giving examples that demonstrate how they meet the criteria. This should be done in English and using no more than three pages.

1. Relevant experience in developing and managing alumni or other networks.

2. Some knowledge of the Australian and Chinese education sectors, particularly universities, sufficient to be able to advise the Embassy and Consulates in China on university and alumni engagement.

3. Under limited supervision, ability to manage projects and organise small and large-scale events, including budget development and management, involving liaison with other organisations, planning and implementation.

4. A very high standard of written and spoken English is essential. Proficiency in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese is desirable.

5. Initiative, flexibility, adaptability and a demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-cultural team.

6. Ability to organise and set priorities, perform under pressure and complete projects and assignments in a timely manner.

7. Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop networks, and to communicate with the public and Embassy contacts in a professional and helpful manner.

8. Experience in leveraging online and social media platforms to develop networks and promote events. Experience in managing contact databases is desirable.
