Vacancy – Media Researcher/Translator, Defence Attaché Office (LE 7)

The Australian Embassy in Beijing is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified person to fill the position of Media Researcher/Translator, Defence Attaché Office. This position is full-time. The annual salary for the position is RMB 179, 529 plus employer social security contribution.

Please note that only applicants short-listed for interview will receive a written reply.
Applicants short-listed will be required to undertake a two hour translation test (Mandarin to English and English to Mandarin) on Defence related topics sourced from the media.
 

Media Researcher/Translator (LE7)

Duties:
1. Produce a weekly summary of defence related articles in the Chinese language media.
2. Produce direct translations of documents as required eg. TPN, Fax, Invitations.
3. Conduct directed research on defence related topics in Chinese language and English language media.
4. Support office management by utilizing language skills to assist staff in administration and engagement activities.

Selection criteria:
Applicants should address each of the selection criteria and provide examples which demonstrate their ability to perform the duties of the position.

ESSENTIAL

1. have a very high level of proficiency in written and spoken English using appropriate syntax and grammar;

2. have a very high level of proficiency in reading Mandarin Chinese;

3. have a demonstrated ability to translate public-sourced media and other materials from Mandarin Chinese to English, providing exact translations or concise summaries;

4. have a demonstrated ability to prioritise a busy workload and produce work within tight deadlines;

5. have a demonstrated ability to translate from English to Mandarin Chinese;

6. have an interest in defence, military, and strategic issues;

7. be highly motivated and able to carry out duties with minimal supervision;

8. have a demonstrated high level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word;

9. have a demonstrated high level of proficiency in conducting internet research
